Jumping on a Low Cost Cell Phone Plan

Most folks are paying more than twice as much as they need to for cell phone service! The biggest reason for that is because they haven’t shopped around- they’re blindly paying the overpriced plans from 5 years ago. The average monthly cell phone bill is $73 and by the end of this episode, you’ll know how to get that down drastically- closer to the $25 per month mark which is the new golden standard. Plus, you’ll be able to do that without having to be on a massive friends and family plan like we are (seriously, it’s like we’re playing a game of sardines!). If you are looking for a new plan here’s some more info:

***Updated 09/06/19*** Joel and I (along with our wives) have both switched over to Mint Mobile and they’re offering the best deal we’ve been able to find with 8GB of data and unlimited talk and text for $10 a month for the first 6 months! And since they’re on the T-Mobile network, coverage has been great with really fast data too!

Best cell phone plans for single lines:

  • Republic Wireless ($20 for 1GB but better rates of $5 per GB when you use more)
  • Xfinity mobile ($12 for 1GB + $12 per additional)
  • Unreal Mobile (1GB for $10 or 2GB for $15)
  • Project Fi ($20 + $1 per tenth of gig you use).

Best cell phone plan for two lines:

  • Most of the single lines will also be great for two people.
  • If you’re over 55 – T Mobile $35 per line for $70 total. T Mobile is also offering 50% off for military families.

Best cell phone plans for 4 lines or more:

  • Cricket Wireless does 4 lines of unlimited for $100
  • Sprint offers a whole year of service for FREE to new customers.
Casa Agria Zarza Marron

And during this episode we enjoyed a Zarza Marrón by Casa Agria Specialty Ales which you can find and learn all about on Untappd. A big thanks to our friend Josh for trekking this beer all the way to Atlanta. YES! I just switched over to Mint Mobile and got this deal. Now to convince my husband to stop paying Verizon $120 a month. Blech!

Are you guys still on Mint Mobile? I’ve been on it for a year now, at your recommendation. The service is “just okay” but the customer service is a NIGHTMARE. They billed me back in June (2020) for a year AND for a 3-month plan on the same day. I’ve been struggling with them ever since to get the charges rectified. It’s been 3 months, and I’m still trying to get them to refund the year-long charge of over $300. They had a chat feature at one point for customer service, now that seems to be gone. I’ve tried calling over and over, and keep getting a different case number for each time I call. I’m very frustrated, and ready to hop back on a major carrier. I’m totally frustrated!

Hey Kirsten. We are! I’m sorry that you haven’t had the best experience. And it’s definitely not cool that they aren’t treating you well on the customer service front. Shoot us an email with details – howtomoneypod@gmail.com and I’ll send an email to the media relations department over there to see if there’s something they can do to fix the issue for you.

There are a number of confusing things in life- for some it’s deciphering the latest Christopher Nolan film, for others it might be the process of building whatever is in that flat pack box from Ikea. But what about taxes? They can also be a puzzling topic and we also tend to have some janky tax ideas in our brains. Unfortunately, those ideas are often what we base our decisions on if we don’t have a tax professional in our life. So our goal for this episode is to clear up some more common tax misconceptions out there and to make sure that we’re all making decisions based on what’s true instead of based on a video that someone made on TikTok, or what we heard a friend say. 37 0

Jennifer Barrett is a longtime financial journalist and she has written for publications like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Money, and Newsweek. She has accomplished so much in the world of money: Jennifer has developed and hosted a popular personal finance video course on Udemy, given a TEDx talk on the importance of wealth-building, and she’s also appeared on many TV shows as well. And central to our conversation today, she also has a new book that just came out, that’s titled “Think Like a Breadwinner” which is all about empowering women who want to earn more money. This is a helpful episode for everyone out there, but especially for the working woman. 53 3
