You’ve worked hard for your money, so you should be able to keep every, single, penny. Right?! Well, aside from taxes, you have every legal right to keep your money- however, we’re here to tell you that you would be better off giving a portion of your money away. Whether that means a simple year-end charitable donation or taking the steps to set up a donor advised fund, there is room in your budget to be a giver. And even if you’re not able or willing to set aside a percentage of your income towards giving, you could start with giving away some of your time. Be a volunteer! Charitable giving is something that’s always been important to me. I have a few key charities that I support most strongly, but I also keep room in my budget to donate at critical moments or when friends who are putting a big effort (e.g., a fundraising run, walk, bike ride) into a cause ask. Time donation can also be quite valuable. I like to volunteer at the shelter for my local humane society. The main reason I give is to support organizations that I think are providing a valuable community service and, as you noted in the episode, doing so efficiently.

I recently started to listen to your podcast and I can’t stop listening. First of all, I love craft beer! I live in Wisconsin, so that goes without saying that we love our beers and have many options here. I would love to come down to the Atlanta area (not Hotlanta) and have a drink with you guys.
I wanted to send a message to the both of you after listening to this episode about giving your money aware. From listening to other podcasts, I believe you are both church going people as am I. My wife and I make a huge commitment to give to our church first. I was wondering why you didn’t mention the topic of tithing in your episode?

Dan, an astute observation- Joel and I both go to church and tithe! We didn’t spend much time on the topic, but I am pretty sure that we mentioned giving money to our church. It is certainly important to us, however, there have been times when we try to be careful in how we share our beliefs with listeners. Specifically, we think that it’s tough to share about our faith when it’s a one way conversation and there isn’t a dialogue that can take place. Email, our facebook group, and even comments like this all offer that element that I feel is lacking when it comes to podcasts.
